About

Micah

In the late 1980s, the congregations of downtown Fredericksburg witnessed an urgent need: the community's homeless, many grappling with unmedicated mental illnesses, disabilities, and various barriers, were left without shelter or sustenance. In response, they opened their church doors, offering refuge and meals to the desperate.

However, as the years passed, the original intent evolved. Despite initial responses, many remained ineligible for aid, finding solace only on the cold streets. This was until 2005, when a shared vision among these churches was ignited. Determined to find a lasting solution, they united in a profound community effort, leading to the establishment of a permanent shelter.

This act of unity wasn't just about addressing immediate needs. Rooted in Micah 6:8, "Doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God," the essence of this collaboration birthed the Micah Ecumenical Ministries. Our dedication to the values of justice, kindness, and humility set the groundwork for an ongoing mission. Today, nine downtown congregations, embracing the understanding that unity can achieve more than individual efforts, steer Micah with fervor and commitment.
